What is all that equipment at Pierce Family Vision?

OCT

Optical Coherence Tomography is now an indispensable part of our adult eye exams. Using regular light, it allows 3D and cross-sectional detailed images of the macula and optic nerve as well as the cornea and iris. OCT is quick, easy and comfortable to do. As well as assisting diagnosis and management of macular degeneration and glaucoma, the OCT images can be sent with referrals to Ophthalmologists.

Optomap

Our clinic got our first Optomap in 2003 and our newer tabletop Daytona gives even better ultra-widefield retinal images, giving a view of up to 80% of the retina at a time. As well as helping diagnose retinal and optic nerve conditions, such as retinal detachments and diabetic retinopathy, these images provide a detailed baseline at your first visit to allow comparison for any future eye health changes. Recommended for all, school aged and up.

Autorefractor/NCT

This new combination unit gives an estimate of the prescription, along with measurements of corneal curvature and eye pressures. While the patient looks at a landscape photo, light and lenses are used to estimate the prescription. For adults, it then switches modes to use a gentle air puff for glaucoma screening.

Humphrey Visual field

This is a diagnostic tool to measure peripheral vision. It uses a large bowl shaped field on which light targets of varying size and brightness are flashed while the patient presses a clicker to register each target seen. Some targets are not intended to be seen which can make this test challenging. HVF is essential for diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as glaucoma, optic neuropathies and neurological lesions.

Myah

This exciting new addition uses light to measure the length of the eye (usually between 22-27mm), as well as mapping the topography of the corneal curvature. When done starting at about age 5, we are able to give parents a printout with their child’s measurements plotted on a growth chart. Done on a regular basis, the Myah helps our optometrists:

  • Identify children at risk of early myopia
  • Observe the connection between axial length of the eye and prescription
  • Monitor the effectiveness of our amazing new myopia control glasses and contact lenses (they really do slow down prescription changes!)
  • More cool features include assessing our patients’ dry eyes via “Dry Eye Mode”!

Optikam

Our new eyewear measuring device allows for more accurate and customized lens designs for glasses and prescription sunglasses, especially for more complex prescriptions such as progressives, high myopic or hyperopic prescriptions or wrapped designs. It takes 10 easy measurements using one quick iPad photo with the patient in a natural posture wearing the new frame. High tech for glasses measurements!

Auto Lensometer

Have you ever wondered how we measure the prescription in your glasses? Lensometers use light to focus through the lens and give this precise measurement. We still have our old manual lensometer in the back office but you will be able to see our new hands free unit in action when you are being pretested. This fully automated one-touch Solos unit maps out the prescription and can even measure UV light transmission. Bring in your sunglasses if you want us to test for UV blocking ability and give you a printout to take home!
